12 Sep Macedonia

Part Balkan, part Mediterranean and rich in Greek, Roman and Ottoman history, Macedonia is a landlocked Balkan nation of mountains, lakes and ancient towns with Ottoman and European architecture. The capital, Skopje, is known for its sprawling Old Bazaar quarter and historic buildings turned museums, including the National Gallery of Macedonia, housed in a 15th-century Turkish bath complex. Skopje also is a very attractive tourist destination with its fortress, cultural and historical monuments, archaeological sites, sport halls, caves in the canyon of the River Treska and Lake Matka and a health spa in the eastern part of the city. The town with the beautiful quay of the Macedonian river “Vardar”, the narrow streets in the Old Bazaar which is the biggest bazaar preserved in the Balkans today, the town is internationally famous for being the birthplace of Mother Teresa. The southern city Ohrid, on a lake of the same name, has a medieval townscape and hilltop castle. Being the largest and most beautiful out of Macedonia’s three tectonic lakes, Lake Ohrid is about 30 kilometres (18 miles) long and round 288 meters (945 feet) deep. Its astonishingly clean and clear waters, together with the serene stillness of its mountain settings have captivated visitors since prehistoric times.  Glittering Lake Ohrid and the historic waterside town of Ohrid itself have etched out a place for Macedonia on the tourist map, but this small nation is far more than just one great lake. Bitola is the second largest city in Macedonia with a history dating back to the middle of the 4th century B.C. Back then it was known to the ancient world as Heraclea Lyncestis, a city founded by Phillip II of Macedon (father of Alexander the Great). For this, Bitola is the oldest city in the Republic of Macedonia. The ruins of the Heraclea Lyncestis, an ancient city in the kingdom of Macedon are located just 2 kilometres south from the centre Bitola, at the foot of Baba Mountain.
